History

What we now call Quilchena Golf and Country Club was founded by a 15-member committee headed by Dr. G.F. Strong in 1925. Our first course was built in the Arbutus neighborhood on the west side of Vancouver. This land was known as Asthma Flats or Consumption Hollow, due to heavy autumn fogs. The area became a collection spot for a number of creeks, which drained into English Bay. Native Indians called the spot Quilchena, meaning “sweet water,” and thus the golf course was named Quilchena Golf Course Ltd.

Quilchena originally had a nine-hole golf course and a cottage-style clubhouse with an excellent view of the North Shore Mountains from its verandas on the highest points of land at 29th Avenue and East Boulevard. Although the golf course suffered many difficulties in construction, financing and membership, its official opening took place in September 1926. In 1927, nine additional holes were added. In 1953, a 115-acre site called the Sherwood Potato Farm in Richmond was bought for $72,000 as a location for a new Quilchena golf course due to complications with a lease at the Vancouver location. After the move, membership dropped from 500 to 103 members. In 1965, shareholders realized that many shares were held by those who did not play golf and were sources of lost revenue. It was then agreed that Quilchena become a society, renamed the Quilchena Golf and Country Club Ltd. Membership then grew to 300.

Since Quilchena moved to its present site, changes and improvements have continued. In 1992, the golf course underwent a comprehensive $1 million redesign. In 1995 members decided to build a modern clubhouse and golf shop complex complete with full locker rooms, dining, banquet and lounge facilities. Today, the members who approve the budget and set the fees and programs each year own Quilchena Golf and Country Club. The Board of Directors is elected by the members at the annual general meeting and is responsible for the activities of the club. Membership is now 900.

Quilchena is a premiere golfing experience in the Vancouver area. Quilchena Golf and Country Club has always been devoted to the members’ well being and to the entire social and competitive aspects of the game of golf. Quilchena’s Management Team and the Board of Directors are continually committed to improve the golf course and club services to meet or exceed the expectations of members and guests.
